Someone on the poultry forum I belong to thinks that both Marans are females! It very difficult when you don’t have another one to compare them and you are just using photos. I am almost totally certain the Welsummer is a female, which is just as well looking at the size of a Welsummer cockerel. They have taken to perching on the edge of the box and watching me all day long. It seems even chickens get bored.

Mums World Famous Lemon Curd!
Now my kids would die for this, they really LOVE my lemon curd. Why they like it so much more than any other I dont know, but the stuff you buy at the shops is foul, you just can’t beat the real thing made with good ingredients.
I have done my back in giving Boris his injection! My family came round today to help with some decorating but I couldn’t bend down so made them some lemon curd to take home instead. The fact I have my own chickens helps, but I am really irritated to see that rats have been burrowing into the coup to pinch the feed. This is despite having three cats…who are about to be sacked!
MWF Lemon curd
3 organic lemons
200g caster sugar (superfine)
115g unsalted butter (sweet)
2 large ( US extra large ) eggs
2 large ( US extra large) egg yolks.
Wash lemons, grate the skin and place in a heatproof bowl. Cut the lemons in half and squeeze the juice minus pips into the bowl.
Set over a bowl of simmering water and add the butter and sugar. Stir until sugar dissolved and butter melted.
Put the eggs and yolks into a bowl and beat together with a fork. Pour through a sieve into the lemon mixture and whisk well until thoroughly combined.
Stir the mixture constantly until it thckens and lightly coats the back of a wooden spoon.
Remove from the heat and pour into warm sterilized jars. Cover seal and label. Store in a cool dark place and use withing three months. Once open store in fridge.
My sunflowers are enormous!
I am not sure why……but they are much bigger than everyone elses and I didn’t feed them. I put it down to chicken poo…….I tried to take some photos today but the sun was in the way, in the end I got this one…its slightly on the turn, but if I tell you I am standing underneath it it will give you some idea. I like sunflowers, they are such cheerful plants, and very useful. When I put the seeds in I put them in the same time as some dwarf ones and forgot they needed to grow so tall. As a result they were late out but the bees have been busily working them, they are great pollen plants. Last time I tried feeding some of the seed heads to my chickens. John Seymour said you could just chuck them the head and they would pick at it, his were obviously more intelligent than mine. They hadnt a clue, they looked at them as if they had come from outer space. They do enjoy some fruit from the trees though and like raspberries when they can get their hands (or feet?) on them..
